Young Carers: Through Our Eyes

Young Carers: Through Our Eyes (2012)

Children living in HIV/AIDS-affected families often feel isolated, stigmatized and alone. A group of children involved in a national research study have made a 14-minute movie to show the world what life is like through their eyes. Phathiswa, Neziswe, Vusumuzi, Nokhanyo and Lulamale show the viewers how their life has been affected by the sickness or death of their parents and invite them into their houses. Filmed in townships in the Western Cape the children give a glimpse into their daily lives, what it feels to care for someone who is sick and how poverty affects their schooling and their mental health. They describe experiences of stigma and the loneliness and hopelessness they are experiencing in the face of HIV/AIDS.
